Since 1967, the ZIP-indexing system has been declared mandatory throughout the United States. At that time in America, a funny cartoon character Mr. Zip, or Zippy, even appeared on TV screens, urging citizens not to ignore the new system.
In 1983, it had to be complicated and add four more digits specifying the place where correspondence should be delivered, for example, an apartment complex, quarter, branch of a company or division of an organization.
Speaking of what a zip code is, it is impossible not to mention that US government agencies use special numbers. These five and nine digit zip codes cannot be held by any postal user in the county.
