If you have singled out Brahma chickens at least once in your life, then you are unlikely to have any doubts that this is a decorative breed. But not many housewives and farmers would agree to breed them only because of their peculiar appearance.

Brahma chickens are usually raised for slaughter, because the average weight of roosters is at least 3.5 kg, and chickens - at least 3 kg. The weight of females can reach 5 kg, and among the males there are also larger specimens that reach 7 kg. But at the same time, they are not much worse than other poultry laying eggs.

Brahma chickens got their name thanks to the Indian Brahmaputra River, from the port of which their great-grandfathers were brought to the USA. It is in this country that the issues of their selection are most seriously de alt with, crossing various subspecies of birds. This chicken was bred there in the form in which it is found with us.

Many believe that breeders crossed 2 types of birds to produce Brahma chickens - Cochinchin and Malay. The result is a subspecies with a large body, dense plumage, long back and shaggy legs. However, its representativesquite mobile and productive. When creating favorable conditions, up to 150 eggs can be obtained from laying hens per year. Each of them is covered with a dense brown shell, and their weight ranges from 55 to 65 grams.

More farmers are now paying attention to these birds. Brahma chickens are unpretentious, they do not need constant long walks, moreover, they can even rush in winter. By the way, this process begins in birds at 8 or 9 months, so the first eggs from young animals are obtained precisely in the cold season. It is worth noting that many people like to talk about the aggressiveness of the roosters of this breed. But the struggle for supremacy in the chicken coop is characteristic of all representatives of birds. The farmer should just make sure that there is one leader in his subsidiary plot, but special attention must be paid to his choice.

If you want to breed this bird, then choose a rooster first. It should have a large body and abundant fluffy plumage. But the head of a thoroughbred representative will be small, with a poorly developed occipital part and a wide forehead. Unlike other breeds, the crest of Brahma roosters is poorly developed, it is quite small. But his neck is very strong, it is beautifully arched. The tail is small, but it is beautifully fluffed.

Even if you are buying not adult birds, but just laying eggs, look at those representatives of the species from which they were obtained. This is the only way you can understand what Brahma chickens are: photos cannot convey themsize, plumage and a serious look.

By the way, not all farmers like to talk about the profitability of their content. But taking into account the fact that at present few people are breeding this bird, not only their large carcasses are in demand, but also eggs: they will be purchased both for food and for breeding.

Before you buy chicks or eggs, please note that Brahma chickens differ not only in color. Despite the fact that the American meat subspecies is mainly distributed in our country, there are also Asian decorative meat and European decorative chickens. In farms, it is advisable to breed only the first: the rest are used, as a rule, as a natural decoration for rich estates and estates.
