History of occurrence

The historical roots of the important and long-awaited holiday for Bryantsy go far into the mists of time. Nobody knows the exact date when the "Svenskaya Fair" (Bryansk) was held for the first time. The foundation for its appearance was laid by the festive trade near the walls of the Svensky Monastery. When the period of Troubles passed, the country began to revive after the devastation, and the advantageous position of Bryansk made it a trading center. The authorities in those days strongly supported and controlled activities related to trade. Foreign merchants were allowed to trade hereany products other than tobacco and wine. The choice here was the widest. Merchants from Lithuania put up for sale all kinds of clothes, vessels made of various metals, leather, livestock, lard. Eastern merchants traded in furs and Volga fish, and northern merchants in metal, wood and linen products. Turkey and the Crimea were sources of rice, cotton, calico and paper. Fabrics and dried fruits came to the fair from the West. By 1867, the "Svenskaya Fair" fell into decay due to the shift of the state border towards the West.

Religious site

Andreevsky Meadow was not chosen by chance for the Svenskaya Fair. Previously, trade took place near the nearby Svensky Monastery. This male Orthodox monastery was founded back in 1288 at the behest of Prince Roman Mikhailovich of Bryansk. According to legend, the prince suddenly becamehis eyesight was deteriorating, and in order to be healed, he asked for help the miraculous icon of the Caves Mother of God, which was kept in the Kiev-Pechersk monastery. Overcoming a long journey along the Desna, the icon disappeared from the boat in an unknown way and ended up on the coast of the Sven River. The prince came to this place and, having prayed, was healed. On this occasion, he ordered the construction of a monastery in the name of the Mother of God in this very place. The monastery still serves today. Guests arriving at the Svenska Fair from other cities visit the shrine with pleasure.
