Bulls with a nose ring in the pasture have probably been seen by all people. This phenomenon is widespread and is considered quite ordinary. But few people think about why a bull has a nose ring. Why do we need such an “accessory” of KRS and what is its purpose?
Of course, bulls don't need such "piercing" for beauty. Do not try in this way and mark their animals by their owners. In fact, the nose ring is nothing more than a very effective means of taming the bull.
Main purpose
So, why would a bull have a nose ring? Male cattle are known to be powerful and unusually strong animals. At the same time, their character, and especially among non-castrated producers, is very capricious. It is often difficult for a farm owner to drive a bull into a stall, let alone, for example, to inspect it or vaccinate it.
In order for the animal not to resist, the owner, if necessary, uses a metal ring. Bulls, like almost any other mammal, have only three sensitive places: eyes, ears and nose. Rendering even lightpressure on pain points, the animal can be made to obey very easily. At the same time, the nose, or rather, its septum, is the most convenient place for exposure in cattle.
As soon as the owner presses on the ring, the bull becomes very accommodating in anticipation of pain. The animal either stands still, or obediently follows the owner, who uses his "piercing" as a leash. Scientifically, the ring inserted into the nose of a bull is called a septum. Translated from English, this literally means "partition".
When bulls get ringed
Thus, why a bull has a nose ring is understandable. But when is such a “piercing” done to animals? Carry out this procedure in most cases bulls, selected as producers, under the age of one year. In principle, this operation does not represent anything complicated. Experienced farmers in most cases perform it on their own. But for a beginner who has only recently started breeding cattle, it is better to entrust the banding procedure to a veterinarian.
Firstly, acting ineptly, a non-specialist in performing this operation can cause serious damage to the animal. At the same time, wounds in the bull's nose can subsequently become inflamed, which will have an extremely negative impact on his general well-being and lead to a temporary decrease in productivity. The answer to the question of why a bull has a ring inserted into its nostrils is taming. That is, the task of the farmer in this case is to facilitate the care of the animal. However, the goby should not suffer during banding, of course, in any way.case.
And secondly, the procedure for attaching the ring can be dangerous even for the most inexperienced farmer. A frightened bull in pain will certainly begin to resist and can inflict not only damage on its “tormentor”, but even mutilation.
Sequence of actions
So, why do bulls put a ring in their nose, we found out. But how, in fact, do veterinarians and experienced farmers perform this procedure on farmsteads? When performing "piercing" bulls specialists usually use the following materials:
- medical sterile cotton;
- actually the stainless steel ring itself with a cross section of about 1 cm with a lock and a pointed edge;
- rope;
- syringes.
Medications used in this case:
- "Xylosine" (a drug that reduces motor activity);
- Novocaine 2%;
- rubbing alcohol.
Actually, the procedure for ringing gobies is as follows:
- the animal is completely immobilized with ropes (including the head);
- they give the bull an injection of "Xylosin" into the jugular vein at a dose of 0.5 ml;
- clean the nose of the animal from mucus with cotton wool and inject novocaine into the septum;
- carefully pierce the animal's septum with the sharp end of the ring and snap the lock into place.
Recommendations for the procedure
Complete sterility on the farm before piercing the septum to the bull, of course, will not work. Therefore, all tools and materials withcarrying out this procedure, without fail, must be treated with alcohol in the most thorough way before use.
As soon as the bull comes out of anesthesia, he is given additional anesthesia using, for example, the drug "Meloxicam". It is advisable to repeat the same procedure 12 hours after the operation. In the future, the nose of the animal should not be touched for a minimum of 8-10 days, until the septum is completely healed.
What other animals can get rings
Nose piercings are mostly seen only in bulls. But sometimes pigs are “ringed” in a similar way. The answer to the question of why a bull has a nose ring is taming. For pigs, a similar procedure is carried out for a slightly different purpose. In this case, the ring is used, of course, not at all to tame the animal. For pigs, such an accessory is inserted into the nose so that they do not dig up the floor in the barn or the ground in the yard.
Why bulls have a ring in their nose is therefore understandable. But sometimes a similar "piercing" can also be seen in small calves. Farm owners insert a nose ring into such animals when it is not possible to keep the young animals separately from the queens. The ring in this case prevents the calves from sucking the milk from the cows.
