Cabbage is a vegetable grown mainly from seedlings. This not only helps to bring the harvest time closer, but also makes the heads firmer and well ripened. They can lie in the cellar for several months without any problems.

There are a lot of varieties of cabbage. Seedlings at home are grown quite simply. The main thing is not to delay the planting of cabbage. Experts say that seedlings "overexposed" to the period of formation of two true leaves can lead to a defective harvest.

Cabbage planting is carried out mainly on smooth arable land. On waterlogged soil with a close passage of groundwater and in irrigated areas, seedlings are planted on ridges and ridges by hand.

Varieties of this vegetable crop come in two categories: early cultivars or with late ripening. Favorable days for planting cabbage, which is harvested earlier than other subspecies, are the first days of May. Seedlings are placed in the ground according to slightly compacted patterns, so that up to forty centimeters remain between rows.

Planting of late varieties of cabbage is carried out a little later: from the middleMay to mid-June.

Some experienced gardeners soak seedlings for several minutes in a one percent solution of karbofos, thereby protecting them from pests.

The first thing to do is to choose the right place for planting seedlings in open ground. It must certainly be an open place on all sides with fairly loose, fertile and moisture-permeable soil. It is preferable to change the site every year. The best predecessors of this vegetable are legumes, cucumbers, some root crops. Moreover, if cabbage also grew on the site before, then it is better to plant it in the same place in three years.

Planting cabbage involves digging small holes with a sapper shovel. The depth of the pits is done in such a way that the real first leaf on the seedlings in the planted state is at the very surface of the soil.

Before planting, it is necessary to sort all the seedlings, setting aside the weak and destroying the diseased. Cabbage planting should be carried out, if possible, on a cloudy day, when it starts to rain.

After placing the seedlings in the ground, the plant is sprinkled with earth, compacted. Then the seedlings are watered and mulched with humus or dry soil so that it retains the necessary moisture in the ground and prevents it from evaporating.

For the speedy rooting of seedlings, after transplanting, it is watered very weakly for a week, keeping only the top layer of soil moist. Young plants should also be shaded during the week during the midday hours.

Planting cabbage, which is grown first in peat pots, is not very difficult, but it almost always gives good results.

Almost all varieties of this vegetable crop respond well to organic matter. Therefore, if fertilizers are applied when planting cabbage in the spring, then it is better to use compost or humus for this at the rate of two or three kilograms per square meter.
