White cabbage can be considered perhaps the most popular crop in our gardens. Almost every summer resident grows this he althy and tasty plant. Varieties of white cabbage are classified into early-ripening, mid-ripening and late. In central Russia, mainly the first and second are grown. Late-ripening are more common in the southern regions. Most of them are distinguished by excellent taste, an abundance of vitamins and unpretentious care.

Many summer residents grow on their plots both early-ripening varieties of white cabbage and medium ripening at the same time. The fact is that the heads of cabbage of the former have a delicate taste and are suitable for making salads, but they cannot be fermented. Mid-season varieties are excellent for canning. Their heads are dense and often slightly flattened. They are also distinguished by an increased degree of keeping quality. Such heads can be stored in a cool place all winter until the next harvest.

Late varieties of white cabbage are mostly bred specifically for the southern regions. Their distinguishing feature isheat resistance. In ordinary varieties of cabbage, with strong overheating of the soil, the roots are damaged. Heat-resistant of this shortcoming are deprived. Their heads differ in density, and they, like mid-ripening ones, are suitable for storage and fermentation.

Early ripe varieties

The best varieties of cabbage for growing on salads are June and Gribovsky-147. The first is resistant to low temperatures (it can withstand temperatures down to -6 degrees Celsius). This variety can be called ultra-early. The first heads of cabbage can be obtained within three months after the seeds are planted in the ground. If you plant them for seedlings in March, and then transfer them to a greenhouse, the result will be in June.

Its ancestor Gribovsky-147 is a very old variety. It was bred back in 1940. Its heads of cabbage ripen a week later than the June one. They are also distinguished by excellent taste and a huge content of vitamins.

Mid-ripening varieties

Mid-ripening varieties of white cabbage are divided into mid-early and mid-late. Of the first, Slava-1305 can be distinguished. This is perhaps the most popular variety in our gardens. Almost every summer resident grew it. It is distinguished by high yield, excellent keeping quality, excellent taste and undemanding care.

F1 Menza can be considered the best mid-late variety. Its distinctive feature is huge heads of cabbage weighing about 9 kg. This is the largest cabbage to date. Like Slava, heads of cabbage differ in density and perfectlysuitable for pickling.

Late-ripening varieties

Late varieties of white cabbage, as mentioned above, are heat resistant. Of the best, Biryuchekutskaya-138 and Amager can be distinguished. Heads of the first are distinguished by a flattened shape and density. This variety, along with Amager, is considered one of the most keeping. Both are just great for pickling.

Currently, more than 70 varieties of white cabbage have been bred. They may differ both in terms of ripening and suitability for cultivation in different regions. In addition to heat-resistant, there are also varieties intended for breeding in Siberia (Vyuga, Transfer F1, etc.).
