SMD engines are diesel engines. Their production was established back in 1958 at the Kharkov plant. Serial production engines of this brand were intended for use in agricultural machinery - tractors, combines, etc. However, production was discontinued in 2003 as the manufacturing plant closed.
General information
The range of SMD engines includes motors such as:
- four-cylinder in-line;
- six-cylinder in-line;
- V-shaped six-cylinder units.
It is also important to note that any of these motors are highly reliable. This parameter is ensured by correctly adopted design solutions, which, even by today's standards, may well ensure a long service life of this motor. To date, the production of this type of units has been established at the Belgorod Motor Plant.

- Cylinder displacement is 9.15 liters.
- The power of this unit is 160 hp
- The number of rotations of the crankshaft reaches 2000 rpm, the nominal minimum value is 800 rpm, and the maximum nominal value is 2180 rpm.

- The locations of the cylinders in the motor are V-shaped, while the camber angle is 90 degrees.
- The diameter of each cylinder is 130mm.
- Stroke is 115 mm.
- The cooling system of this motor is water, closed type, and also equipped with forced ventilation.
- The characteristics of the SMD engine also provide for a combined lubrication system, the starting system is presented in the form of a P-350 starting engine with remote start.
The installation of such engines is carried out on such types of tractors as T-150, T-153, T-157.
Engine Description
The line of six-cylinder V-shaped SMD engines is represented by engines such as SMD 60 … 65 and their more powerful versions - these are SMD 72 and 73.
According to its design features, the SMD 60 is a four-stroke power unit with direct injection of diesel fuel. Of the main parts of this engine, a block crankcase stands out. In this type of motor, it is designed to combine cylinders into one solid block and add an upper part to themcrankshaft housing. The necessary rigidity in such a motor is achieved due to the presence of partitions between the cylinders and the end walls of the crankcase.
This engine is cooled with water. In winter, this system is allowed to replace water with antifreeze. The system has a centrifugal water pump, which provides the necessary circulation of fluid throughout the closed cooling system.
Maintenance
Maintenance of these engines comes down to the fact that constant monitoring of its operation is required, as well as timely maintenance, which are prescribed in the operating instructions for each engine. The manufacturer can guarantee that: the motor will work for a long time and without failure; maintain all its power indicators throughout the entire service life; be highly economical; only if the necessary maintenance is provided as specified in the instructions.
The repair of SMD engines is most often resorted to due to the fact that malfunctions occur, and they, in turn, appear only due to non-compliance with the operating rules. If crankcase oil has been ejected through the exhaust pipe, then as repair work, it is necessary to operate the engine at low or idle speed for a long time. If oil has been ejected through the flywheel housing, then there are two reasons for this: the self-adjusting oil seal has been deformed, the sealgear ring has been sheared off. As a repair, it is necessary to replace the failed parts.
SMD-23, SMD-24, SMD-31A
The device of the SMD engines of this line is as follows:
- 4-stroke diesel engines;
- direct fuel injection is made into the chamber in the piston;
- has a liquid cooling system;
- equipped with a turbocharger and an intermediate cooling system for the air injected into the cylinders.
The technical parameters of these engines also fully comply with current requirements. The liter power of the SMD 23 is 19.9 kW / l, and for the SMD-31A engine 18.2 kW / l. The specific metal content of these engines, as well as the specific fuel consumption, are also at a high level. Oil consumption for waste is from 0.4% to 0.5% in relation to fuel consumption. Achieving such high performance became possible due to the fact that the system uses turbocharging of air into the cylinders, as well as cooling of the charge air. In addition, oil-cooled pistons, damping of torsional vibrations are also implemented in these engines, and the temperature regime of the diesel engine is improved through the introduction of a water-oil heat exchanger.
SMD-62
The installation of such engines is carried out on tractors T-150. The unit itself consists of such parts as: a crankcase, a crank mechanism, two cylinder heads, a cooling system and a lubrication system, a gas distribution mechanism (GRM).
The placement of cylinders in such a motor is carried outat an angle of 90 degrees or 1.53 radians. Also, these cylinders are made in the form of a single block with the upper part of the crankcase. To carry out the process of fuel purification in this engine, there are two types of filters. One is for fine cleaning of fuel, the other for coarse cleaning. In order to clean the air entering the cylinders, the engine has an air cleaning system, which is presented in the form of paper filter elements. In order to start this engine, a single-cylinder gasoline starting engine is used. The transmission of rotation from this engine to the flywheel SMD-62 is carried out by means of a gearbox with one stage.
Cost and reviews of the SMD engine
It is worth noting that the cost of these engines is very low. It cannot be compared with imported analogues. All components for these units, which may be needed during repairs, are also low in cost. It is also worth noting that, despite the long break in the production of these models, there are a lot of spare parts for them and it is not difficult to find them, since there were too many of these engines in the past.
However, it is worth noting that they have a low cost for a reason. Reviews about SMD-21, for example, are not the most pleasant. Despite the fact that the overhaul was carried out once a year, the maximum speed was only 80 km / h when driving downhill and the clutch depressed, and if not squeezed out, then 60 km / h. The owners also said that everything was constantly spinning from vibration in the engine. The only plus thatstood out from user reviews, this is fuel consumption, which was only 20 liters per 100 km.
