Origins
The plant begins its biography back in 1801. Then it was called "St. Petersburg iron foundry". Its main task was the casting of cores, which were intended for smooth-bore artillery pieces.
Since 1812, the plant began to try its hand at mechanical engineering. The first steam engines were made here. In addition, I had to master artistic iron casting: the plant was actively involved in the creation of architectural monuments of St. Petersburg and its famous suburbs.
In the late autumn of 1824, as a result of a severe flood in the northern capital, the plant was flooded and destroyed. In the next almost four decades, he fought for survival.
Rebirth
In 1868, the future Petrostal Metallurgical Plant was bought by N. I. Putilov, a well-known engineer of that time. For ten years, the new owner turned it into a modern diversified complex for those times. It became the main plant in Russia, which supplied rails for the entire railway system of the empire. The production of high-quality steels, ammunition, wagons, cannons, gun turrets for the navy began here. The plant also produced tools that were in demand in the industry, large-sized metal structures, andas well as other products, many of which were produced using our own technologies.
As the owner of the plant, N. Putilov was also notable for the fact that he was the first to begin to pay serious attention to the social sphere. Under him were opened: a hospital, a library, a canteen. At the factory settlement, he built a theater and laid out a park. He was an innovator in the creation of an advanced system of vocational training.
The era of revolutionary upheaval
Before the start of World War I, the Putilov plant became an important center of domestic engineering. He was at the forefront not only in Russia, but also in Europe, in the field of locomotive building, shipbuilding, turbine building and artillery production.
The shocks of the beginning of the 20th century did not bypass the Putilov factory. Its workers actively participated in the revolutionary movement. More than 10,000 Putilovites took part in the civil war. Of these, as the most conscious representatives of the working class, agitators were formed who, during collectivization, created collective farms in the countryside.
Restoring production
After the end of the civil war, when devastation reigned in the young Soviet Russia, the plant was able to manufacture equipment for the Volkhovskaya hydroelectric power station. The enterprise began production of Fordson-Putilovets tractors. The production of agricultural machinery became the main activity until the outbreak of World War II. In total for the pre-war period, the future“The Petrostal Metallurgical Plant has produced nearly 200,000 tractors.
The company also produced steam turbines, gantry cranes, tunneling shields designed for the construction of the subway. The plant was also involved in the production of equipment for providing mechanisms for the Moscow-Volga water canal. The plant produced engines for combines and T-28 tanks.
In December 1934, the plant, by that time called Krasny Putilovets, was renamed the Kirov Plant, in honor of the tragically deceased member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks S. M. Kirov.
Years of the Great Patriotic War
With the beginning of the Second World War, in the fall of 1941, the main part of the plant was evacuated to the Urals. Its equipment and personnel took part in the creation of the Chelyabinsk plant, which launched the production of heavy tanks and self-propelled guns.
The remaining factory structure in besieged Leningrad was only 4 kilometers from the front line, becoming a constant target of shelling and bombing. However, the plant continued to live and produced products for the front.
It was here that the famous militia of besieged Leningrad was born.
Post-war years
After the end of the Second World War, the plant was actively involved in the production of Kirovets tractors, power engineering and the implementation of tasks in the interests of the peaceful atom.
In the period 1967-1975, the future Petrostal Metallurgical Plant (TIN 7805059786) was not spared the transformation. A complete renovation has been carried outopen-hearth and rolling shops.
After the Kirov Plant was corporatized in the fall of 1992, the Steel Rolling Plant was formed from its kapr, open-hearth and rolling shops, which became an independent enterprise within the structure of Kirov Plant OJSC.
Another reorganization in the fall of 1995 led to the fact that the company was transformed into Petrostal Metallurgical Plant LLC, a subsidiary of Kirovsky Zavod OJSC.
