MEMZ 245 is a four-cylinder water-cooled internal combustion engine produced at the Melitopol Motor Plant. The motor is designed for compact Ukrainian cars "Tavria" and "Slavuta". The power unit has good technical characteristics, and is also easy to repair and maintain.

History of Creation

The first research and development work began in 1975 and ended in 1979. Acceptance tests of the MeMZ 245 engine as part of the ZAZ-1102 took place in 1982, according to the results, it was recommended for serial production. But mass production did not start immediately.

Mass production of power units began in 1988. The power of this motor was 51 liters. With. In 1991, a modification of the MEMZ 24520 was developed specifically for the LuAZ-13602 Volyn cargo-passenger vehicle.

Over the entire history of production, the engine has received a significant number of modifications and improvements. This was done to improve the motor, and also adjusted tocertain parameters. Also, other motors, such as 307 and 317, were developed on the basis of a standard power unit.

According to the factory documentation, the motor resource is about 130,000 km. During normal operation, as well as standard maintenance, it was possible to reach 150-170 thousand kilometers. To achieve these results, it was necessary to reduce the maintenance interval by 20%.

Motor Systems

The design features of the motor are quite simple. The power unit is very similar to the VAZ 2108. The MeMZ 245 engine consists of such systems with the following elements:

  1. Power system -emulsion carburetor with the function of shutting off the fuel supply at forced idle.
  2. Gearbox - mechanical with two shafts and five gears forward and one reverse.
  3. Lubrication system - wet sump mixed.
  4. Cooling system - liquid.
  5. Electrical equipment - battery, voltage - 12 V

All motors manufactured by the Melitopol plant are of the same type and have minor design differences. So, the MeMZ 245 injector differs from the MeMZ 307 only in the volume and size of the combustion chambers.

Maintenance

Maintenance of the power unit is typical and typical for the entire line. Due to the simplicity of the design, servicing the MEMZ 245 engine will not be difficult even for novice drivers, not to mention experienced car mechanics. So we do it ourselves. More details about each operation at each MOT are described in the manual issued specifically for Tavria cars. It is worth noting that at each maintenance, in addition to these actions, it is necessary to change the oil and oil filter.

MOT Required operations Period
1 Inspection of the technical condition of the engine 8000-9000 km after purchase or overhaul
2 Replacing air and fuel filters 17000-18000 km run
3 Timing kit replacement, valvetrain adjustment, valve cover gasket replacement 25000-27000 km run
4 Replacement of air and fuel filters, diagnostics of all engine systems, repair of possible malfunctions

Power unit repair

The most frequent repairs carried out with the MEMZ 245 are the replacement of oil, timing belt and water pump. At this stage, repairs can be easily done at home, but we trust professionals to overhaul.

To carry out a major overhaul, some conditions and equipment will be required. So, for boring a cylinder block, a boring and honing machine is needed. And for grinding the head of the block - a surface grinder.

Oil change

Replacing the lubricant in the engine is one of the most frequent operations carried out when servicing a vehicle. This is done in order to provide maximum care for the motor and preserve its full life. The recommended service interval is 10,000 km, but to increase the service life, it is recommended to reduce it to 8,000 km. The operation takes no more than 30 minutes with a completely cold engine and is carried out in the following order:

  1. Removing the battery terminal.
  2. Withdrawalengine protection (if present).
  3. Unscrewing the oil drain plug.
  4. After draining the oil, remove the oil filter.
  5. Installing a new filter element.
  6. Replacing the sealing copper washer on the drain neck, tightening the latter.
  7. Filling new oil through the filler neck. The required amount of oil should be between the Min and Max marks.
  8. Twisting the neck, starting the unit. Lubricant check. If it is not enough, we add it to the required level.

According to the technical documentation, 3.5 liters of oil is placed in the engine.

Delayed maintenance: consequences

Untimely change of motor fluid leads to the gradual destruction of the main elements of the motor. So, due to an excessive amount of metal impurities, seals begin to collapse, which leads to leaks and backlash of parts.

Also, the consequence may be that the motor will lose a significant amount of its resource. Another negative factor will be excessive overheating of the oil, which the engine cooling system cannot cope with. The combination of all factors will lead to increased wear and, accordingly, will bring the overhaul of the power plant closer.

Replacing the timing belt

The timing belt is a part that requires timely care. This is due to the fact that if the element breaks, the valves will be bent, which will lead to a major overhaul of the block head. This can hit the owner's wallet hard.

MeMZ Timing Replacement245

The Memz 245 timing mechanism is pretty standard, but not everyone can replace the belt, thereby increasing the earnings of various car services. Consider how to replace the timing gear yourself:

  1. Removing the battery terminal.
  2. Removing the timing guard.
  3. Shift speed to 4, lock the handbrake.
  4. Twisting the wheel until the first piston reaches top dead center.
  5. Fixing the camshaft pulley.
  6. Loosen tensioner pulley, remove belt.
  7. Removing tensioner.
  8. Assembly in reverse order.

Pump replacement

Water pump - an element that is responsible for the circulation of coolant through engine systems. When an element fails, the liquid stops circulating, and accordingly, the power unit begins to overheat, which will lead to the most unpredictable consequences (for example, deformation or deflection of the block head).

When replacing the water pump, you must not forget that its pulley is connected to the timing belt, which means that its dismantling is inevitable. The steps of this operation are as follows:

  1. Removing the battery terminal.
  2. Removing the timing guard.
  3. Draining the coolant.
  4. Removing the belt from the camshaft pulley and pump drive.
  5. Unscrewing the three screws securing the water pump, dismantling the latter.
  6. Assemble in reverse order.
  7. Starting the engine, adding coolant to the required level

Gap adjustment

Check andit is advisable to adjust the clearances in the valve drive mechanism at a service station. The purpose of this operation is to normalize the operation of the engine.

Repair of the block head MeMZ
Repair of the block head MeMZ

If the motor is poorly adjusted, it loses its efficiency and increases the likelihood of premature wear of its components. With reduced clearances, burnout of the valves and their seats is inevitable. When increased, the power of the motor will decrease, shots are formed in the muffler. Checking and necessary adjustment should be carried out every 20,000-30,000 km. All information about the correct clearance sizes is in the vehicle repair and maintenance manuals. Consider the sequence of actions when adjusting the gaps:

  1. Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC of the compression stroke. The TDC mark on the KV pulley must match the TDC mark on the casing, and the slider should be opposite the cover electrode, which has the number 1. In this position, the clearance of the exhaust valve of the third cylinder is also adjusted.
  2. Loosening the adjusting screw nut on the rocker arm. Setting the required clearance by turning the adjusting screw. In this case, it is necessary to move the corresponding probe.
  3. Tightening the nut and checking the gap.
  4. Successively turning the CV 180° and adjusting the gaps in the order shown in the table below.

It is worth emphasizing that on the MEMZ 245 engine, the valve clearances should be: inlet - 0, 13-0, 17, exhaust - 0, 28-0, 32.

MEMZ 245: revision. Option one

Modification of the motor is necessary to increase the power characteristics. Since the power unit is of Ukrainian origin and is intended for vehicles manufactured in Ukraine, the car was almost never sold outside the country. And before finalizing the motor, as practice shows, motorists reached themselves.

Of course, the design bureau of the Melitopol plant, like any other, does not welcome the tuning of its power plants, but motorists often do not have enough power, for example, to drive up a mountain, this pushes them to increase the amount of horsepower under the hood of a vehicle.

MeMZ 245 owners usually do their own tuning of the power plant, since the engine design is simple. The increase in power on the motor is achieved mainly by installing parts of its more powerful modifications. Consider some of them:

Crankshaft. Installed with MEMZ 2457 or 2477. The connecting rod knee is located 4 mm further from the center of rotation of the crankshaft, and thanks to this, the motor has an additional 100 cc. see

Pistons. Installed with MEMZ 2457 or 2477. On these models, they have a shorter skirt and an offset finger hole

Flywheel. A flywheel is installed from MEMZ 307 to MEMZ 245. This will allow you to slightly modify the motor. In this case, the refinement of the MeMZ 245 engine for the injector will be less painful. It also reduces the amount of vibration

Tuning. Option two

There is also a tuning version that makes the engine lighter. Required actions:

  1. Install lighter pistons, low-set valves, lighter connecting rods and lighter CV.
  2. Updating the cooling system by replacing the nozzles with silicone ones, installing a tuned version of the pump.
  3. Shortening the exhaust system by 5 cm, which will add an additional 12 liters. s.
  4. Carburettor overhaul: new jets are machined or old ones are machined.
  5. Light clutch installation.
  6. Installing a zero resistance air filter.
  7. Replacing the timing drive.

There is also cylinder head tuning. An increase in power is possible by reducing the hydraulicresistance. This is achieved by improving the profile of the cylinder head channels - removing coarse tides, increasing the cross section of the channels. It is possible to install bronze guides and refine the valve profiles so that they more resemble the letter "T". The final step will be to increase the compression ratio by grinding the plane of the valves.

It should be understood that the engine loses part of its resource after modifications. If the tuning is carried out correctly and everything is pre-calculated, then it can lose very little. But if the refinement is carried out without calculations, and besides, significant overloads are subsequently put on the engine, then the life of such a motor will be 70-80 thousand km, no more.

Conclusion

The MeMZ 245 engine was created in order to compete with similar engines that were installed on the VAZ-2108. Melitopol designers succeeded due to good quality, ease of maintenance and repair, which can be carried out independently in your garage. This is achieved due to the simplicity of design and the absence of complex electronics.
