Before sowing beets, a gardener needs serious knowledge in growing them. Even some characteristics of the culture depend on the shape of the root crop. The flat shape indicates that this is an early ripe variety, the growing season of which lasts 70-80 days. In round beets, the vegetation lasts up to 100 days; it belongs to mid-season varieties. The root crop, which has a conical shape, ripens the longest and belongs to late-ripening varieties. Naturally, the later the crop is harvested, the more suitable the grown and harvested products are for winter storage. There are two main answers to the question of how to plant beets - sowing seeds and sowing seedlings. An approximate seed sowing algorithm consists of the following steps:
- preliminary soaking of seeds before sowing (about a day);
- selection of sowing time. If you want to get early production, it is best to sow the seeds before winter or early spring. At the same time, they begin to germinate at 3-5 degrees Celsius and, depending on the further temperature, seedlings may appear in the range of 12-20 days. To obtain a crop for the winter, seeds are planted in early summer;
- direct sowing of seeds in pre-preparedsoil to a depth of about 4 centimeters. The main attention of the gardener when preparing the soil should be paid to how to plant beets with a low level of acidity. To eliminate such a misfortune, ash should be added or lime is better.
Beets are a relatively frost-resistant crop, seedlings can tolerate frosts up to three degrees. However, there are agricultural zones of risky farming in which it is advisable to grow beet seedlings. These are mainly the northern areas of the country. In this case, beet seedlings are planted in the ground about thirty days after the end of frosts that are stable in the area, and about 4-6 leaves will form on the plant.
BEET CARE
The first thinning in technology, how to plant beets, should be carried out when 3-4 full-fledged leaves are formed on the sprout. The thinning step between the shoots is approximately 3-4 cm. During this process, the most viable shoots are left, and the lagging ones are removed. During the second thinning, a similar procedure is carried out, only the gap between plants should increase to 8-10 cm, and by this time the root crop should reach several centimeters in diameter. After each thinning, it is recommended to apply organic matter in the form of slurry, or to fertilize with mineral fertilizers at the rate of 30–50 g/sq. shaded places, but very demanding onlight.
As evidenced by the advice of experienced gardeners, if beets are grown for home use, it is most effective to plant them around the perimeter of a potato field. Then the family is guaranteed not to be left in the winter without such a universally recognized and he althy product, which is essential not only for cooking borscht, but also for all kinds of snacks.
