General Description

To begin with, it is worth saying that AD31T1 is an alloy in which there are three main elements. These elements are Mg-Al-Si steel, in other words, it is an alloy of magnesium, aluminum and silicon. According to the characteristics AD31T1 belongs to the group of deformable aircraft. Among other similar materials, it compares favorably in that it has high ductility. In addition, it has sufficiently high technological properties and high resistance to corrosion. It should be added that this alloy lends itself well to such mechanical processing as stamping, rolling, drawing, and many others. The main purpose of this raw material is the manufacture of parts with good decorative characteristics and a low margin of safety.

Chemical description of the alloy

Characteristics of AD31T1 are regulated by GOST 4784-74. This alloy is made on the basis of aluminum, the proportion of which is about 99.3% of the total mass. The remaining 0.7% is silicon and magnesium. In addition to them, this small mass fraction also includes titanium, iron, zinc and manganese.

For example, the characteristics of AD31T1 vary greatly due to the fact that the amount of iron is approximately 0.5%. Because of this, ductility and strength are reduced, since this component forms various intermetallic compounds. However, it does, for example, reduce the tendency for the material to crack during casting. As for manganese, it has a positive effect on the resistance of the material to corrosion, and also eliminates the loss of strength of the alloy during aging.

If we talk about the full percentage list of chemical elements in this alloy, then it looks like this:

  • iron - up to 0.5%;
  • silicon from 0.2 to 0.6%;
  • amount of manganese - up to 0, 1%;
  • chromium content - up to 0.1%;
  • titanium contains a little more - up to 0.15%;
  • aluminum takes from 97.65 to 99.35% of the total mass fraction;
  • copper contains as much as manganese;
  • magnesium - from 0.45 to 0.9%;
  • zinc - up to 0.2%.

In the end, it is worth adding that the characteristics of the AD31T1 alloy in terms of chemical parameters are very close to the composition of the 6060 alloy, which is quite widely used in Western Europe.

The difference is that 6060 contains less iron - from 0.1 to 0.3%. However, it is worthnote that the presence of this component has practically no effect on the mechanical qualities.

Advantages of material parts

To understand the advantages of an alloy, it is necessary to consider the products that are made from it.

So, the benefits include the following qualities:

  • The characteristics of AD31T1 aluminum make it possible to achieve high strength structures, which at the same time will weigh quite a bit;
  • materials have good sound insulation properties;
  • service life is long enough;
  • high corrosion resistance and excellent ductility;
  • aesthetic appearance of products;
  • ease of maintenance, which is the absence of the need for thorough maintenance;
  • wide opportunities for the production of fairly complex structural products.

However, the characteristics of the aluminum alloy Ad31T1 have their weaknesses. Among them, it is worth highlighting that high plasticity closely borders on a high level of deformation, which becomes especially noticeable when the temperature decreases significantly. This can make it difficult to transport parts.

Application of alloy

Despite its shortcomings, this material is widely used.

It is traditionally used in the production of aluminum profiles. Approximately 57% of all manufactured products are made from this alloy. They are able to compete perfectly with galvanized steel, ashigh resistance to corrosion is observed in both materials, but the aluminum alloy does not require periodic application of a protective layer, unlike steel.

Due to a number of advantages, the material is well suited for the manufacture of pipes. The characteristics of AD31T1, such as high corrosion resistance and non-toxicity, have led to the fact that the alloy has become very popular in the manufacture of containers. Usually they are then used to transport nitric acid, organic matter or even food. AD31T1 is also used to produce foil used for cans and tetrapacks.

Recently, this material has been increasingly used in the manufacture of communication cables, as well as overhead cables. This was made possible due to the fact that it has a greater margin of safety than the copper that was used before. The use of AD31T1 alloy made it possible to increase the size of the span, as well as reduce the amount of damage during the installation of lines, which occurred quite often. With regard to electrical conductivity, the material took second place immediately after copper, but at the same time its cost is about 1.5 times lower. In addition, aluminum is much lighter, which plays an important role in the assembly of compact products, which must contain a large number of elements that conduct current.

Alloys AD31T1 and 6063

In conclusion, it is worth noting that there is an American-made analogue - alloy 6063. The main coincidence is that the two main alloying elements are silicon and magnesium. The amount of the first element can be from 0.2 to 0.6%, and the second - the same as in AD31T1: 0.45-0.9%. However, there is a slight difference, which is that 6063 uses chromium instead of titanium. In addition, the alloy belongs to the group of average strength, but at the same time, during the passage of thermalprocessing can improve these qualities, as well as AD31T1.
