Learning foreign languages is a good way of self-development and knowledge of the world around us, studying the cultural baggage accumulated by mankind throughout its history. In addition, knowledge of foreign languages allows you to make good money: working as a translator brings a fairly high permanent or additional income. This is an indisputable fact.
Translating spoken or written text from one language to another is what a translator's job is. It is divided into many specializations: technical translations, literary and artistic, legal, oral, written, simultaneous, and so on. Such specialization must be indicated in the resume submitted for the vacancy of a translator.
Working as a business translator
Every organization has overseas business partners and international projects, or at least aims to. This task cannot be solved without the help of an interpreter: with his help, business negotiations are conducted, all kinds of documents are drawn up. Communication with a variety of people, business trips to different cities of Russia and abroad - this can be the work of a translator. In Moscow or St. Petersburg, it is paid especially high.
Translating a written text is no less demanded and responsible activity. Large companies, banks, law firms constantly have to deal with foreign texts on their topics. A technical translator, as a rule, chooses one specialization.
Remote work
It is also possible to work as a translator on the Internet. Freelance exchanges, sites for finding remote work provide such an opportunity. A remote translator is an employee who performs work without concluding a long-term contract with the employer, and is engaged only in a certain list of work. Thus, it has a number of advantages in comparison with a full-time translator:
- He makes his own work schedule. It doesn't matter what time he does it: his task is to complete it on time and with high quality.
- He can turn down a job offer if he doesn't like it, or he's already busy enough with other projects, or he just doesn't feel like working at the moment.
- He can work as a full-time translator, as a main job, or just earn extra money with their help.
Alas, such a convenient work as a translator has its drawbacks, common to all freelancers. Chief among them is the absence of any guarantees.
- Being unofficial, this work may remain unpaid: the customer may happily take the finished text and disappear.
- Freelancing, of course, does not imply a social package: no paid holidays, sick days and weekends.
- Finding enough orders with decent pay is not always possible.
Most popular foreign languages
What are the best languages to learn to work as a translator? The most demanded and popular language today is, of course, English. It is followed by German, French and Spanish.
