Turning seems to be a simple and straightforward process. This is due to the fact that the choice of the desired part is limited by the existing bodies of revolution, and the movement of the tool is carried out only in one plane. However, in reality this is not the case. Turning uses a variety of tool shapes and a wide variety of technologies.

Technical capabilities

Turning from a technical point of view allows you to perform the following operations:

- turning and boring of a circle and forgings;

- facing and plane processing;

- cutting grooves of different profiles;

- threading.

Types

There are several types of turning, namely:

  • Turning metalworking. This method allows you to obtain cylindrical parts by cutting. This type of processing is considered the most popular. For the implementation of this procedure, a material of a high degree of hardness, strength, heat and wear resistance is used. Often, tool carbon and alloy steels, including sintered alloys, are machined on lathes.
  • Drilling. This process makes it possible to make in metalblanks and through holes. For this, a twist drill is used.
  • Boring. This procedure is used to increase the diameter of holes in a part. Such work is carried out on vertical or horizontal boring machines.
  • Planing. This procedure is carried out using the reciprocating work of the incisors. Distinguish for such processing longitudinal-planing and cross-planing machines.
  • Pulling. This procedure allows the mechanical processing of the product. This work is based on a tool with a large number of blades.
  • Milling. This procedure is carried out with a special effective tool with different blades or cutters of different shapes.
  • Sanding. Turning at the final stage is presented in the form of this procedure, which consists in grinding the surface of the product using sharp edges of abrasive materials that remove a thin layer of metal.

Turning Parts

To obtain cylindrical parts, craftsmen use turning parts. This procedure is carried out in the form of boring and turning cylindrical, conical and shaped surfaces, as well as trimming and end processing, drilling, threading. Turning parts can be carried out both on a metal lathe and on a wood lathe. It all depends on the equipment available.

Wood turning. Features and Highlights

Another important process in turning is wood turning. To carry out such work, woodworking machines are used, designed to turn various figures from cylindrical wood. Good tools are considered to be those machines, the working surface of which is made of high quality steel. The lathe allows you to make a wide variety of products: spinning wheels, dishes, toys, and other household items.
