JSC Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant: history and production

JSC "Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant" is one of the largest enterprises in the country's defense sector. The company became famous for the design and manufacture of artillery systems. Today, NMZ produces complex military-technical products, as well as reactors and components for nuclear power plants, including ships with a nuclear power plant.

Foundation

Even before the revolution, Krasnoe Sormovo, a large machine-building plant in the Nizhny Novgorod region, was hatching plans to transfer part of its bulk production (primarily metallurgical) to another site. Only with the advent of Soviet power did the practical implementation of this project begin. In 1921, survey work and the design of future workshops were launched. However, the plans were changed in favor of creating a defense enterprise instead of a metallurgical site.

Nizhny Novgorod Engineering Plant(NMZ) was founded in 1932 as a site for the mass production of artillery systems. The first products were 76-mm guns DRP-4. They were still produced in unfinished, poorly equipped workshops, but the Nizhny Novgorod people coped with the task. In 1938, factory designers led by the outstanding engineer V. G. Grabin presented the F-22 gun and a modified version of the F-22 USV to the government. The commission headed personally by I. V. Stalin, decided to set up a large-scale production of guns as soon as possible. More than 2,500 units were made before the war.

Development

In 1939, thanks to the efforts of Grabin and the administration, a unique model of narrow specialization of workshops was first introduced at the Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant, which made it possible to carry out in-line assembly of guns in large quantities without compromising quality. Thanks to revolutionary methods of organizing production, the company remained the best manufacturer of artillery systems in the industry.

After the Second World War, the plant mastered the production of the latest special equipment, equipment for nuclear power plants, steam generating units for the nuclear fleet, industrial products, consumer goods. The team was awarded 5 highest orders of the USSR.

NMZ has existed as a joint-stock company since 1992-01-07. And on April 23, 2002, the plant became part of the Almaz-Antey concern. On 20.08.2009 the company was included in the list of strategic companies.

Specialization

The main activity of Nizhny NovgorodEngineering Plant is the design, manufacture, modernization and operational support of radar systems and air defense, artillery weapons, reactor and auxiliary equipment for the country's fleet and nuclear energy, including military purposes.

In addition, NMZ is engaged in production:

• equipment for morflot;
• ANNU (steam generating nuclear installations);
• mining and explosion-proof electrical equipment;
• heating plants;
• equipment for the needs of agriculture, forestry and oil industry;
• machine and handling equipment;
• consumer goods.
• metallurgical products;
• installation, adjustment and repair of heat and power, electric power equipment, power facilities.

Manufactured products are sold in three main market segments:

• military products (PVN);
• products for nuclear power plants and shipbuilding industry;
• civilian products.

The most important area of the military product line is the long-term participation of the Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant in the international market of special equipment, mainly associated with the sale of air defense systems and artillery systems. Since 2012, there has been an increase in production volumes for nuclear power plants and the shipbuilding industry, which amounted to about 17% of the total output. The output of civilian products also increased significantly, the share of whichreaches 15%.

State Defense Order

In the framework of the State Defense Order of Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant, in recent years, products of the following nomenclature have been produced:

• complex "Sky";
• Volga Complex;
• two types of chassis equipped for the promising complex "Vityaz";
• antenna posts of the S-400 complex;
• the enterprise, together with the Federal Research and Production Center NNIIRT (Nizhny Novgorod), manufactured and supplied products "Niobium".

The Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant, in cooperation with OKBM Afrikantov, produces steam generating units of various designs. Together with the head unit of the State Design Bureau Almaz Antey, it is modernizing the existing S-400 air defense systems. Today, a large-scale project for the construction of the second production line is being carried out at NMP. After the implementation of the plan, the plant's capacity will at least double.
