Ukraine ranks 15th in the world in terms of the length of the railway network. The total length of all railways in the country is 21,700 km. One third of them are electrified. In our article, we will briefly talk about Ukrainian railways, their rolling stock and the current state.
Ukrzaliznytsia: in facts and figures
Public Joint Stock Company "Ukrainian Railway" (also PJSC "Ukrzaliznytsia") is a state-owned enterprise that provides passenger and freight transportation by rail. In this area, it is a complete monopoly in Ukraine.
The railroad history of Ukraine began in the second half of the 19th century. The first railway on its territory was laid in 1861. She connected Lviv with the Polish Przemysl. Three years later, the Odessa-B alta railway line appeared, which was extended to Kyiv in the late 1860s. At the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, the Carpathian region was covered by a network of narrow-gauge lines.
TodayUkrainian railways are:
- 1640 stations.
- 120 main stations.
- 26 railroad directorates.
- 50 locomotive depots.
- 174939 freight wagons.
- 2718 locomotives.
- 1796 electric locomotives.
- 1547 electric train sections.
- Over 350 thousand employees.
Ukrzaliznytsia annually carries 500 million passengers and about 300 million tons of various cargoes.
The current state of the railway infrastructure of Ukraine
It is worth noting that Ukrainian railways are 95% the heritage of three empires: Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Soviet. This applies to rolling stock, the railway network, and service companies.
Over the entire history of PJSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" management changed 17 times. According to experts and ordinary passengers, the most useful for the Ukrainian railway system was Georgiy Kirpa, who served as director of the enterprise from 2000 to 2004. Involved in the modernization of the Ukrainian railways and foreign personnel. In particular, in 2016-2017, Wojciech Balczun, one of the best managers in Poland, was appointed head of the state enterprise. But even this did not bring the expected results.
The current state of the enterprise leaves much to be desired. Thus, according to the adviser to the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine A. Kava, 75% of all diesel locomotives in the country are operated, despite the overdue repairs. Minister A. Pivovarsky even assessed the state of affairs in the railway sector as"terrifying", especially noting the deplorable state of the canvas. Because of this, in particular, high-speed Intercity trains are not really such, as they simply cannot reach the required speed in many sections.
Today, the main problems of PJSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" are the following:
- High depreciation of rolling stock.
- Significant average age of electric and diesel locomotives (50 and 30 years respectively).
- High degree of deterioration of freight cars (up to 90%).
- A large number of accidents and breakdowns of rolling stock.
Ukrainian Railway: trains and prices
Railway is the most affordable transport in Ukraine. And given the catastrophic condition of many roads in the country, it is also the most convenient.
