The most important part of the urban transport system is the subway. The practice of the existence and development of large megacities convincingly indicates that there simply cannot be a reasonable alternative to it.

How did the Moscow metro develop?

The Moscow subway has been successfully transporting passengers for eighty years now. its effectiveness is especially pronounced at the beginning of this century, when a sharp increase in the number of cars led to endless traffic jams on all the main highways of the capital. But the basic scheme for the development of the metro was formed back in the thirties and forties of the last century. For its time, it seemed almost perfect. And only time has shown that this is far from the case. The radial-ring scheme of metro development led to an overload of the city center with a stream of transit passengers, who, in order to get to the desired station, had to go in the direction of the center, where all existing lines converged. Or follow the Circle Line with two transfers. This problem only intensified as the city grew in a peripheral direction. Outlying areas became more and more remote, and the number of people in them steadily increased. And at the same time, gradually came the understanding of the fact thatthe subway development scheme needs to be changed.

Change in concept

It was only possible to save the central part of the city from passengers transiting through it by laying new lines that would connect the outlying areas. And the new scheme for the development of the metro in Moscow involves, first of all, the design and creation of lines that do not pass through the historical center of the city, and transfer hubs between them. They are called "chord" lines. The creation of the so-called "light metro" system changes the general concept of the development of the metro infrastructure in an even more fundamental way. It refers to open lines running along the right of way of the railway in the direction of the largest cities in the Moscow region. For their residents, a significant part of whom work in Moscow, this is more than relevant.

On the outskirts of Moscow

Radically, the existing metro scheme may change after the completion of the construction of four chord lines. They will come to those areas of Moscow where they are currently needed the most. These lines will form a single contour. It should connect all Moscow outskirts with each other. The organization of movement along it involves the route principle. It is still unknown whether one of the routes will be circular. But if such a decision is made, then two circle lines will actually operate in the Moscow metro. The first chord line is already under construction. Planned for the end of 2015commissioning of its first section.

Moscow metro: development for the period up to 2020

It is for the next five years that the approved plans for the construction of metro infrastructure apply. And it is currently being built in several directions at once. The scheme for the development of the metro until 2020 involves the emergence of new stations both in the historical center of the city and on the extensions of already existing radial directions. The two currently operating metro lines, Solntsevskaya and Kalininskaya, should become one. The launch section of the Kalininskaya line will pass through the historical center of Moscow in 2019. It will include Volkhonka, Plyushchikha, Kutuzovsky Prospekt and Delovoy Tsentr stations. Six new stations will open on the Dmitrovsky radius, their construction is nearing completion. The oldest Sokolnicheskaya line in Moscow will be extended to Salaryevo station. It is impossible to say anything concrete about construction plans for a longer period, they are under development.
