The oldest ship found on the territory of modern Russia is dated by scientists to the fifth century BC. In the times of Russia, mainly merchant ships were built. The first shipyard for the construction of warships was founded in 1693 in the city of Arkhangelsk. Exactly therecreated the 58-gun frigate Goto Predestination. Petersburg was founded in 1703, and in it - the Admir alty, the largest shipbuilding plant in the country at that time. Thanks to this, the Russian Empire already had its own sailing fleet by the beginning of the 18th century.
Today, shipbuilding is a strategically important branch of the Russian heavy industry. In 2017, its revenue increased by 14% and reached 523 billion rubles. The main customer in this sector of the economy is still the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

Northern Shipyard
JSC "Severnaya Verf" in St. Petersburg is the company number 1 in the list of shipyards in Russia, the leader of surface military shipbuilding in the Russian Federation. The plant was founded in 1912. Today, over 4,000 workers work in its numerous workshops.
The exceptionally advantageous location near the Sea Canal allows the plant to send its ships for testing on the high seas all year round. "Northern shipyard" is spread over a fairly large area of 90 hectares and has road and rail entrances for the delivery of materials and equipment to its territory. The shipyard has vast experience in the construction of cruisers, minesweepers, destroyers, commercial, patrol and research vessels.
WAZ
Vyborg Shipbuilding Plant is the largest shipyard in the North-West region of Russia. Today, about 2 thousand people work here. The company specializes in the construction of passenger ships of high complexity, icebreakers, offshore drilling platforms. A related line of business is ship repair. The real pride of the Vyborg Shipyard is the Alexander Sannikov, a powerful and at the same time maneuverable icebreaking vessel capable of operating at extremely low temperatures (down to -50 degrees).
Krasnoe Sormovo
PJSC Krasnoe Sormovo is one of the oldest shipyards in Russia. It was founded back in 1849 in Nizhny Novgorod. The first Russian cruise liner was created here. It was here that the first Soviet tanks were constructed. Today, the enterprise is engaged in the production of commercial ships of mixed navigation ("river-sea"). The plant is capable of producing from eight to twelve ships annually, while consuming up to 40,000 tons of metal per year.
Diamond
The plant with the unusual name "Diamond" specializes in the production of high-speed ships, coast guard ships, as well as the production of metal structures based on aluminum-magnesium alloys. The company is located in St. Petersburg on Petrovsky Island and has been operating since the early 30s of the last century. Initially, patrol boats were produced on it.
ASZ
Amur Shipbuilding Plant is the largest enterprise in this industry in the Far East. The production of a wide range of shipbuilding products has been launched here, from nuclear submarines to floating platforms for offshore mining of fossil fuels. It also manufactures propellers, generators andvarious spare parts for marine vessels. During the Second World War, the plant launched the production of high-explosive bombs. In addition, submarines that participated in naval battles were repaired here.
Today the company employs at least four thousand people. The plant has nine dry docks at its disposal, allowing the assembly of large vessels up to 200 meters in length.
