The city of Saratov has long been considered a city of trade. A large number of markets and shopping centers in Saratov is a direct confirmation of this. Many trading places were equipped quite recently. The main symbol of the trading business is the Covered Market in Saratov. This is a unique building, built over a hundred years ago and serving its purpose to this day.

Saratov of the early twentieth century

Modern square them. Kirov at the end of the eighteenth century was called Drovyanaya. This is due to the fact that at that very place there were already trading councils where firewood, various logging and hay were sold. The second name of this square is Lesnaya. The market itself was called Mitrofanovsky. The Mitrofanovskaya Church was located next to the mall, which gave the market its name.

Already at the end of the nineteenth century, a large bazaar was located on the site of the modern Covered Market in Saratov. In addition to selling firewood and timber, the market began to sell vegetables and fruits, flour, grain, fish, s alt, milkproduce, livestock and more.

A distinctive feature of the market of that period was that this area was surrounded by swampy swampy places, and a scaffold was placed next to the market itself. The constant dirt and slush did not prevent the development of trade within the Wood Market, but caused great concern to the authorities about the terrible unsanitary conditions that prevailed at the bazaar at that time. The mud almost never dried.

First attempts to improve the market

The marshy area contributes to the reproduction and spread of pathogens of various intestinal diseases. Constant dampness and warmth allow microorganisms to live and multiply. Added to this is food waste (rotting vegetables and fruits, sour dairy products and other garbage), which were thrown out near the trading places. All this contributed to regular outbreaks of cholera and dysentery.

To get rid of the non-drying dirt, it was decided to cover the paths in the malls and in the vicinity of the market with a stone - bursting. Lopunets is a local rock. Unfortunately, it quickly crumbled and turned into crumbs. The next step was attempts to pave the streets with cobblestones. But this did not fundamentally solve the problem of dirt and disease, although the slurry has noticeably decreased.

Market Project

At the end of the nineteenth century, the city government had an idea to ennoble the spontaneous market and give it a civilized look, to create a shopping center in Saratov.

Project architectbecomes V. A. Lyukshin. The market project was presented in 1907 and accepted in 1910, but construction began later. First, various improvements were made to ventilation systems, heat supply and refrigeration equipment arrangement systems. V. A. Lyukshin participated in the development of bridges of the famous Trans-Siberian Railway. For those times, the market project was very bold and innovative. Refrigeration equipment was to be placed in the basement, and products were to be delivered to the malls using electric lifts.

The lack of welding as such in those days made it impossible to build a vault structure using metal ceilings. But a solution was found: the frame was mounted using large-diameter bolts. The glass dome is a kind of know-how of that time.

Construction of the Covered Market in Saratov

The construction of the market began in 1914. At that time, this project was quite ambitious. The building of the Covered Market in Saratov was considered the largest building in Russia with the use of reinforced concrete floors between floors. And the market itself is one of the largest in Russia. Huge winches were used in the construction.

It was planned to place shopping arcades on the first floor, shops, offices, kitchens and several residential apartments on the second floor. The device of the mechanism for opening the doors in the dome of the building was interesting. The mechanism itself was located below.

A little less than one and a half million rubles were spent on the construction of the market. The First World War prevented the timely completion of construction. The building was put into operation only in 1916.

Market Treasure

The covered market of Saratov keeps a treasure. There is a legend about this. Whether this is true or not, no one knows for sure. At the solemn opening of the market, the wife of the governor who ruled Saratov in those years, Princess Shirinskaya-Shikhmatova, in a fit of feelings after a solemn speech, removed a large ring from her finger. Following her example, many ladies of secular society donated their jewelry to the market. All the jewels were collected in a casket and immured in a niche in the northern end of the building.

Architectural features

The covered market is located along the street. Chapaev. The building is rectangular and has two floors. The first contains a large number of trading places. Three hundred were originally planned. Today there are more of them. The first floor sells mostly groceries. The center of the hall is decorated with a fountain with sculptures of two women, who, apparently, are engaged in agricultural work.

Initially, it was planned to finish the basement and interior walls of the first floor with Finnish granite. Unfortunately, the events of the First World War made their financial adjustments. The decoration was made with finishing stone and plastered with marble chips. The military events also left their mark on the functionality of the market: the basement floors were partly occupied by a military hospital. It is also connected with wartime that the year of completion of construction is indicated on the market as 1915, andin fact, the market was finished building in 1916.

The central entrance of the market is decorated with statues of Atlanteans that support the vault. The provincial coat of arms is also depicted above the central entrance. The cornucopia and ears of wheat are obligatory attributes for decorating shopping facilities. The walls of the market outside and inside are decorated with bas-reliefs. The building itself is very similar to the European markets of that period. At one time in Saratov there was an expression "to go to Paris." It meant going to that particular market. The second floor of the building is currently completely filled with shopping pavilions, mainly with clothes and shoes.
