Russian Railways employees, both locomotive and train crews, according to the job description, wear certain uniforms. We will talk about what it is, the form of Russian railway workers, in this article - we will give its brief description, varieties, insignia, history of occurrence and modification.
About the modern form
The uniform of a railway worker speaks of his involvement in the Russian Railways corporation. Its wearing is mandatory for all structural units. The affiliation to any regional branch of the company is indicated by a special sign on the sleeve of the tunic or shirt - the abbreviation of the railway department. Railway pensioners have the right to wear their uniforms with the insignia that they received at the time of their well-deserved rest.
Representatives of Russian Railways note the following about their new uniform of the railway worker:
- Compliance with the universal new corporate brand.
- Escape fromsome militarism.
- Accounting for historical traditions, attention to their continuity.
- Comfort, convenience, functionality and safety of both everyday and dress uniforms of railway workers.
- Aesthetic appearance, originality, appeal to modern fashion trends in the field of workwear.
For each employee, there is a prefabricated set of models of wardrobe items and accessories, which together make up a corporate uniform. At the same time, it is not allowed to add anything from oneself to it - jewelry, a headdress, a sweater, a shirt, etc. The service life of the form is as follows:
- Costume - two years.
- Winter and demi-season outerwear (raincoats, jackets, coats) - 4 years. For workers on branded trains - 3 years.
On all uniforms of railway workers, a distinction is obligatory flaunted - an oval contour gray shield with a red border and red stylized embroidered letters "Russian Railways". It must be placed on the left sleeve - shirt, suit, outerwear.
There are four main types of forms:
- conductors;
- conductor;
- worker of the locomotive crew;
- cashier.
Requirements for Russian Railways uniform
The uniform of the railway worker, the photo of which you can see in the article, must meet the following requirements:

- economy;
- durability;
- practicality;

In addition, it should be made in harmony with the company's main corporate colors - gray, silver, red and navy blue. Much attention is paid to the choice of suitable fabric. It should be breathable (gyroscopic), dirt-repellent, hold its shape exemplarily and not be prone to creasing.
An important condition is the comparative cheapness of the material - after all, the staff of Russian Railways is estimated at several million. Therefore, when cutting, there should be a minimum of costs. What is important - the form is designed according to Russian patterns.

The uniform for employees of branded trains was developed separately - artist-designer Alena Petrova and the company "BTK-group" were noted in the project. So, for the workers of "Sapsan", "Lastochka" and other nominal trains, special forms of the railway worker were developed, a photo of one of which is presented below. In addition to a suit, outerwear, she also has excellent ties, neckerchiefs, scarves for women, men, etc.
It is noteworthy that a uniform suit was made for Vladimir Yakunin, the head of Russian Railways. The fabric for it was specially brought from the UK, and the work was completely handmade. Shoulder straps, cuffs and collar were embroidered with special threads containing silver.
Another feature that unites all the uniforms of Russian Railways workers is the same buttons, specially designed by the Heraldic Council under the President. They are a round silver product with sides and an emblem.the main Russian railway corporation.
About creating a new form
Modernization of the form began in 2003 - then the railway corporation announced the start of a competition open to all fashion designers. The conditions were data from a survey of the railway workers themselves - what they thought was uncomfortable and ugly in the old uniform should have become a taboo for the new one.
Three years later, samples of both the uniform of the railway worker and related accessories and insignia were shown. Very prominent fashion designers presented their work:
- Petersburg salon of Elena Badmaeva.
- Moscow FPC Expocentre.
- Chuvash Fashion House I. Dadiani.
- Moscow studio of Denis Samachev and many others. others
However, the jury chose Victoria Andreyanova, a designer from Moscow, as the winner. It was her works that seemed both original and modern, and connected with the historical past of the railways. In 2008, the first comprehensive show of clothes for conductors, cashiers and drivers took place. The following year, the first trial batch of clothing was introduced on the Oktyabrskaya railway. And already in 2010, the form, modified taking into account all the wishes and suggestions of employees, began to be massively introduced in stages in all branches of Russian Railways.
Railroad student uniform
Unlike personnel workers, the uniform of students of railway educational institutions is not unified. However, students of each of them are required to wear certain clothes to classes - in many ways it resembles a uniformrailway workers:
- Black or navy tailored straight skirts and trousers.
- Classic railway shirt with epaulettes and sometimes a certain insignia - blue or white.
- Tie with rail symbol holder.
- Sometimes a knitted vest with signature piping.
- Cap or cap with Russian Railways logo.
The practice of so-called student groups is also widespread - the recruitment of students from non-core colleges and universities to work as guides in the summer. The guys wear uniforms similar to railway students. Often they are distinguished by a uniform virgin jacket with a number of stripes - the name and emblem of the detachment itself, the educational institution, the nature of the activity of the young worker, the position in the student association. The name comes from the word "virgin lands" - in the Soviet period it was the name of the modern summer holidays, and then - the working summer semester.
The uniform of the railway workers of Tsarist Russia
The history of the railroad uniform begins in 1809. And it is connected with the Institute of the Corps of Railway Engineers. This institution was paramilitary, which affected the form of its cadets and graduates. Their ranks were distinguished by silver epaulettes with gilded stars. Until 1867, graduates wore military uniforms. From 1830 to 1932, railroad workers were also distinguished by buttons with crossed anchors and axes.
Little is known about the uniforms of the first employees. For example, foremployees of the Tsarskoye Selo railway, they were discharged from abroad. Stokers, machinists and their assistants, conductors and chief conductors wore military uniforms and helmets. The last two categories also had the right to carry a fascinated knife. From 1855 years of service began to be marked with special silver galloons: 5 years - on sleeve cuffs, 10 years - on a collar and cap.
The first uniform form was introduced in 1878. Its differences depended on the category:
- railway engineer;
- head office official;
- official of a regional institution;
- ordinary employee.
The difference is the color of the pimples, which was red, blue, yellow and green.
In 1904, engineers and officials had 7 types of uniforms:
- everyday;
- road;
- ordinary;
- summer;
- front door;
- special;
- festive.
Soviet history of the railway form
Let's consider the main milestones in the history of the Soviet uniform of the railway worker in Rostov, Moscow, Chelyabinsk and other cities:
- 1926 - introduction of the first Soviet uniform for a railway worker.
- 1932 - the appearance of new features: blue cloth and red insignia on the buttonholes - stars, hexagons, corners.
- 1943 - the appearance of personal ranks and insignia on shoulder straps. Belonging to one or another area of the railway economy was determined by a special emblem: bridge - builders, steam locomotive - locomotive workers,wagon - brigade of conductors, Soviet sickle and hammer on the background of the French hammer and key - administrative service.
- 1955 - the uniform took on a more civilian look, and the insignia moved to the buttonholes.
- 1963 - the appearance of the own badge of the USSR railways - a wheel framed by wings.
- 1973, 1979 - change insignia.
In 1995, a new uniform of the railway worker of the Russian Federation appeared:
- Insignia: transverse half shoulder straps with intersecting rows of stars.
- Emblem: a wheel in the shape of an ellipse with wings (embroidered in golden color for senior and middle commanding officers, golden-colored metal for junior managers and ordinary employees).
- Cockade on headwear: golden technical badge (hammer and wrench) in an ellipse framed by wings and laurel branches.
As we can judge, based on this brief historical excursion, description and photographs of today's uniforms of railway workers, the modern work clothes of Russian Railways workers are really the most comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and harmonious in different combinations for all seasons.
