Chess is an old game that has been around for 15 centuries. Some call it an art, others call it a sport, and every year they hold competitions among the best chess players. Victory always remains with those who have a clear mind, willpower and are able to make accurate calculations. After all, you need to be able to see all the moves of the opponent in advance so as not to fall into the "trap", to be able to dodge the check and at least lead to such a situation as a draw in chess.

Basic rules of the game

In order to start playing, you need to know the basic rules of chess. Draw, stalemate, checkmate, check - these are the results of the game, which you also need to familiarize yourself with. The whole essence of the game lies in the sequential movement of the pieces on the board to the checkmate, that is, to the position in which the opponent's king is in a hopeless position.

Two players participate, each has 8 pawns, 2 knights, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, king and queen. Pawns are always placed on the second rank, they take the main blow on themselves, protecting stronger pieces. And on the first line are: along the edges of the rook, then the knights, then the bishops, and in the middleking and queen (black on black square and white on white). The first move is given to the chess player with light pieces. And who will play with what is decided by a draw.

How do chess pieces move?

The most important piece in chess is the king. He only moves to an adjacent square, regardless of its color, but only if it is not occupied and is not under attack by an opponent. The strongest queen can move across the board both horizontally, diagonally and vertically on 1, 2, 3 or more squares. Players try to protect this figure, because it has more opportunities. The rook is slightly inferior in strength to the queen. She can walk straight only vertically or diagonally and also on an indefinite number of fields.

The rest of the pieces are the lightest and weakest. The bishop only moves diagonally, one on the black squares and the other only on the white ones. The horse moves in a special way, with the letter “G”, that is, two cells forward or backward and one to the side (right or left). Thus, he jumps from a black field to a white one, or vice versa, from a white one to a black one. The weakest pieces in a chess game are pawns, they always move only forward, since they cannot retreat back. But if at least one reaches the end of the board, then at the player's choice it can become a queen, bishop, rook or knight.

If there is an opponent on the move of any piece, then you can "cut" him, removing him from the board and taking his place. But it is not necessary to take it, sometimes it is better to find another way, so as not to substitutehit your stronger pieces and thereby prevent a draw or checkmate in chess.

During the game of chess, players move pieces around the field, attack each other, “shoot down”, defend themselves. The king is the main piece that is on the board until the end of the game, and it cannot be eliminated. But you can put him in check or checkmate.

Check is a position in which the king is attacked by an enemy piece. And in the next move, it must be protected in one of the ways:

• Move away from the attacked square to another safe square.
• If it's possible, then close with your other figure. If the check is placed by a knight or a pawn, then this method cannot be used.
• Eliminate the attacking opponent with your piece.

Each player in the game tries to checkmate his opponent. This is a position where the king cannot get away from the attack of the piece. In other words, this is the same check, but there is no defense against it. Any piece can checkmate, except for the king, since, being close to the enemy, he puts himself under attack, which is impossible. Checkmate is the end of the game with a complete victory of one of the parties. But there are situations when it is not possible to checkmate in any way, most often due to an insufficient number of pieces on the board. Thus, a stalemate is declared in chess - a draw.

This term comes from an Italian and French word that means "tie game". This is the position of the pieces in which it is impossible to make a move, however, in this casethe king is not in check. In such a situation, a draw in chess is determined. It is not uncommon for situations when there are only two kings on the field. Since they cannot checkmate each other, a stalemate is declared.

Many thanks to the stalemate avoid a possible checkmate. For example, White has a big advantage in the number of pieces. Black has only a king and a pair of pawns, which are covered by their opponents. It seems that checkmate is not far away, but here the king has nowhere to go, since there is an “ambush” everywhere, and you can’t put yourself under attack. Thus, due to White's inattention, a draw is declared in chess, and he earns only 0.5 points in the competition, although he could become the winner of the game.

What does stalemate mean in chess? Is it a loss or a draw? It is difficult to answer this question. For a person who is one step away from victory, an unexpected stalemate is rather a defeat. And for a player who almost got a checkmate, this is almost a victory, because he could not get these 0.5 points at all.
