The owners of suburban areas, by definition, have a few more opportunities to organize a home business. You can, for example, not only engage in gardening or growing fruits and vegetables, but also have pets. Although, of course, many summer residents and aspiring entrepreneurs prefer crop production to caring for animals. This is not only a less labor-intensive undertaking, growing vegetables and fruits, moreover, it does not require such large financial investments and constant (daily) monitoring, and it pays off faster.
One of the good business ideas is growing garlic.
Plot of land
Growing garlic on an industrial scale requires a land plot of about twenty acres (minimum10 x 20 meters required). A summer cottage is perfect for organizing a small business, but if it is not available, land for agricultural needs can be rented. When looking for a suitable place, it is worth giving preference to sandy soils or chernozem-type lands, which are the most fertile and allow you to grow a really high-quality crop.
Renting land within the Moscow region, of course, is too expensive for a budding entrepreneur. So, a plot (twenty acres) near the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station will cost 185,000 rubles a month, that is, you will have to pay more than two million for the year just for rent. In the Smolensk region, for example, the rent of a similar site will be only 20 thousand rubles / month, or 240 thousand per year.
Type and variety of garlic
Having decided on the land for planting, attention should be paid to the choice of the type and variety of garlic and the purchase of planting material. Growing garlic as a business ideally involves the sale of large batches of product with a long shelf life, in addition, it is desirable to obtain large bulbs and cloves - such goods are sold faster. But each type has both advantages and disadvantages:
- Growing spring garlic produces a product with a long shelf life, but small size bulbs and cloves, in addition, you may encounter low yields.
- Growing winter garlic as a business is more profitable, as it allows you to achieve high yields and large bulb sizes,but such garlic is poorly preserved, there is a risk of freezing.
As far as varieties are concerned, it is best for a business organization to consider the following:
- Lyubasha. Differs in unpretentiousness to weather conditions and good keeping quality (storage time), frost-resistant.
- Ukrainian purple and white. Garlic is very well preserved, the yield is about two hundred kilograms per hundred square meters of land.
- Spas. The variety is perfectly preserved, resistant to diseases and parasites. The yield of garlic is twenty tons of product per hectare.
- Kharkov purple. Frost-resistant and relatively resistant to disease, the yield of garlic is average - you can get about one hundred and twenty kilograms of product from a hundred square meters of land.
- Gulliver. A mid-late variety with a high yield, spicy flavor and long shelf life (up to eight months).
- Benefit performance. It adapts to various climatic conditions, is frost-resistant, and keeps well (stored up to ten months).
Planting material
Growing garlic as a business will require the purchase of a batch of planting material. To sow twenty acres, you will need up to a thousand cloves of garlic. So, with an average weight of one clove of 15-20 grams (Lyubasha variety), it is necessary to purchase about twenty kilograms of garlic, which will cost only 2200 rubles. The calculations took into account the wholesale price of planting material (110RUB/kg).
Equipment, inventory and workers
Growing garlic on an industrial scale, of course, requires the involvement of agricultural machinery, since sowing twenty acres on your own is quite labor-intensive. So, you can rent a tractor not for a period of active work. It is not entirely advisable to purchase equipment for full personal use. In addition, you will need shovels, rakes and watering cans.
Garlic cultivation as a business does not require a permanent staff of workers. During the planting and harvesting period, local pensioners, schoolchildren or the unemployed can be recruited for a small fee.
Growing Technology
Garlic, which grows somewhat differently depending on the type, is generally not too demanding to care for. Spring crops are planted in April - the first half of May, winter - in late September - early October. The first type must be planted tightly enough in the furrows: about ten centimeters should be left between the teeth, and fifteen to twenty between the rows. For winter garlic, the distance should be ten to twelve centimeters between cloves and about thirty between rows.
Planting material - garlic (cultivation and care in the open field for which are described in detail in the review) - must be disinfected immediately before planting. To do this, prepare two solutions:
- Six tablespoons of regular table s alt perten liters of water.
- One tablespoon (or three teaspoons) of copper sulfate for the same amount of clean water.
In the first composition, planting material must be lowered for one and a half to two minutes, in the second - for a minute. After that, you can start planting, but the garlic does not need to be additionally washed with clean water.
Care consists in periodic weeding of beds (if necessary) and timely watering. Winter garlic for autumn is best covered with spruce branches, dry foliage or special material. In the spring, you should remove all unnecessary from the beds. In addition, in the spring, plants can be fed with urea, from time to time (twice a month) garlic should be fertilized. With the active growth of arrows, it is better to pinch them off - this is how garlic, growing and caring for it in the open field does not cause any special problems, grows larger.
Harvesting takes place in mid-July (for winter) or late August (for spring garlic). After that, you need to cut the garlic, rinse and dry the product in natural conditions (under a light canopy in the fresh air) for at least a week. Ready-to-sell items should be stored in wooden crates in a well-ventilated area.
Tips & Tricks
Features of growing garlic are known to every summer resident who has ever come across this plant:
- garlic does not like excessive moisture, so watering should be dosed;
- good effect on the yield of a sufficient amount of sunlightlight;
- better to plant the plant in the beds where cabbage, pumpkin, beans used to grow;
- Wood ash is preferable for top dressing.
In general, growing garlic is not such a difficult process. And if you follow the technology, fertilize the beds in time and monitor the plants, you can expect abundant harvests.
Crop sales
Organize sales, if the cultivation of garlic is considered as a business, it is most beneficial immediately to the end consumer, that is, retail. Wholesale buyers can be:
- catering establishments (small batches);
- pharmaceutical companies;
- canneries and meat processing plants;
- vegetable dealers and outlets (small wholesale);
- major retail chains.
Promotion and development
Garlic cultivation as a business involves looking for wholesale customers. So, you can advertise in local newspapers, gardening magazines, online catalogs. At retail, they often start selling to friends and neighbors, after which advertising is built on the principle of “word of mouth”. Promotion of goods on the Internet, which has become an effective method of increasing sales in modern realities, is inappropriate for this business. You can develop the business either by increasing the volumes or by replacing the product - it is profitable to grow parsley, onions, strawberries, and other crops.
Starting capital
So, summing up all of the above, we can say that a small garlic growing business does not require significant financial investments in order to further sell the product. All you need is:
- to rent a land plot (taking into account an area of twenty acres), which will cost an average of two hundred and forty thousand rubles a year;
- purchase planting material in the required quantity, the cost of which will be up to three thousand rubles;
- purchase shovels, watering cans, rakes and other equipment and enlist the help of several workers;
- pay for the water used for watering the beds, and buy fertilizer, top dressing.
Thus, the organization of a business for the cultivation and sale of garlic at first will require from ten to one hundred thousand rubles.
Business payback
From twenty acres of land, you can harvest four tons of garlic (variety: Ukrainian white and purple) or more - depending on growing conditions, varieties and other nuances. With a wholesale price of one hundred and ten rubles per kilogram, the revenue for the entire product will be four hundred and forty thousand rubles. The business will pay off in just one season.
If you organize retail sales, you can earn even more: from one million two hundred thousand rubles. True, it is not so easy to sell four tons of a product at retail. So, a business plan for growing garlic, with a reasonable approach on the part of an entrepreneur, has every chance of being successful.implementation and high profits.
