Currant prefers sandy and loamy soils with sufficient moisture reserves. Planting currants in autumn is carried out by two-year-old or one-year-old seedlings with a well-developed root system.
Accommodation
Planting black currants in autumn should be carried out according to certain patterns.
- The distance between rows is 2 meters, and between plants in rows - up to 1.5 meters.
- The tape pattern is distinguished by a thickened placement of bushes, and the distance between them is from 0.5 to 0.8 meters. Mature bushes with this method will merge into a solid line, and they will need more careful pruning during the growing season.
At first, while the bushes have not grown, you can grow early vegetables between the rows, which will be harvested before picking berries (radishes, herbs and legumes).
In order for the planting of currants in the fall to be successful and all the planting material to take root, the roots of the seedlings must be cut to he althy tissues. Then they must be dipped in a clay mash and left until disembarkation.
Landing
Slanted planting autumn currantwill ensure its best survival in the spring. It is recommended to deepen by 10-11 cm. With such a planting, the buds in the spring will give a powerful vertical growth, due to which a strong productive bush will quickly form. With shallow direct planting of seedlings, the plant will develop as a low-yielding tree with a short growing season.
When planting deep, especially on heavy soil, the root system will not have enough oxygen, and the plant will stop growing, which will also adversely affect the yield.
If soil waters are close, it is possible to plant currants in autumn on hills or ridges (1 m wide).
When placing the root part of the seedling in the planting hole, you need to ensure that all the roots are straightened and do not bend up. Sprinkle with soil with humus and mineral fertilizers, slightly shaking the plant and periodically compacting the soil. Thus, there will be no voids in the root layer, and the earth will evenly fill the planting hole.
It is recommended to plant currants in the fall of two or three varieties at once with different ripening dates.
Irrigation
When the hole is half filled, watering is done (1/2 bucket per hole). Then they fill up the ground, ram it, water it again and mulch it with peat or humus (10 cm).
After planting all the seedlings, you need to loosen the soil between the rows.
All varieties of currant are moisture-loving, as their roots are located 20-50 cm from the surface. If since autumn it has been producedwater-charging watering, then in spring the roots will begin to grow actively, thereby ensuring early bud break and abundant flowering. With a small amount of precipitation in summer, periodic watering of currants is necessary, especially on light soil. In the absence of rain, it is necessary to water the bushes in early June, when strong growth of shoots begins, at the end of June - before flowering; in July, when the berries are poured, in mid-August - after harvesting. And autumn watering is also needed in October, if the autumn turned out to be dry.
Irrigation rate per plant: 50-60 liters per 1 sq. m. Water should moisten the entire root layer of the soil (50-60 cm). In order not to rot the root neck, watering is carried out in a recess (groove) along the circumference of the crown projection or by sprinkling. After irrigation, loosening of the row spacing is a mandatory procedure.
